Workout Update – the Good and the Bad

Rich Bryant | August 27, 2010

During the Winter, Spring and Summer months I’ve moved my workout from being exclusively in the pool to being a mixture of swimming and weight lifting at our local rec center. I’ve certainly added some nice strength to my shoulders, back and arms, but I can also see that I’m not logging nearly as much time in the pool each day as last year.

100 Laps!!!

Rich Bryant | August 8, 2010

Last year I managed on one day to get in an 80-lap day. After that accomplishment I felt pretty good, however the feeling of exhilaration extended into my sleep that night, and I got a sense that I had really overdone it. So, in the days that followed I throttled back to more typical daily lap counts of 40-60.

At the beginning if this summer, however, that little devil that sits on my shoulder started whispering in my ear that I was up to doing a 100-lap day.

I’ve been ramping up my swimming workout a little gradually this season, and have made some nice changes as well.

Back to the Pool – Finally

Yesterday I was finally able to return to the pool and started off with an easy 20 laps and a little fin time.

The Challenges of the Season

Rich Bryant | December 10, 2009

Previously I have made note of a decided decrease in the temperature at the pool, and I must report that this is a trend that has continued in recent weeks. However, through a graduated program of acclimation I have begun to restore my daily pool workout to some semblance of it’s former summertime glory.

Dude, where’s my Tropical Paradise?!

Having recently returned from a 10-day swing from Tampa up through Florida and the state of Alabama into Tennessee, I was more than amazed at the change in climate along the way. Gone were the long, warm, bright and sunny skies of Central Florida – replaced by brief days with nightly blasts of air that, to this Tampan, can only be described as ‘Arctic’.

Moving Beyond the Pool

Rich Bryant | October 9, 2009

Over the past few weeks I’ve begun to add some exercise to my program that extends outside the pool. As noted in previous posts, I’ve begun doing sit-ups on a daily basis and have now, most recently, begun to visit the local rec enter a couple of times each week for some weight lifting.

Measuring Progress, Noodle Legs and Cramps!

Rich Bryant | September 20, 2009

It seems to me the height of illogic to measure the progress of a fitness program by measuring something other than that which you are attempting to improve.

More Changes, Including the End of “Zen Meditation”

Rich Bryant | September 6, 2009

Recently I had started to notice that my once-joyful trips to the pool had begun to feel more like work and less like joy. With a little thought I have come to the conclusion that I’m a victim of my own success, and that as my health has improved I’ve started to push myself in a way that more resembles preparation for an athletic competition than a long-term lifestyle change.

Recent Realizations and Changes to the Workout

New General Observation: “Anything I could do as a teenager outside the pool, I can now do as an out-of-shape 50-year-old in the pool!” This observation, along with improvements in my conditioning and realizations of all the variables that affect my workout, have resulted in me to implementing some significant changes to my pool-centric workout. In this article I will describe those changes in more detail.
