Workout Update – the Good and the Bad

During the Winter, Spring and Summer months I've moved my workout from being exclusively in the pool to being a mixture of swimming and weight lifting at our local rec center. I've certainly added some nice strength to my shoulders, back and arms, but I can also see that I'm not logging nearly as much time in the pool each day as last year.

Where’s My Internet Dividend???

Stop for a moment to consider the profound affect that the Internet has had on human efficiency. Today, thanks to the Internet, if I want to purchase a traditonal recurved Mongolian hunting bow, I have but to execute a simple search. In the days before the Internet just imagine the energies that would be expended in locating a vendor for such an exotic item!

100 Laps!!!

Last year I managed on one day to get in an 80-lap day. After that accomplishment I felt pretty good, however the feeling of exhilaration extended into my sleep that night, and I got a sense that I had really overdone it. So, in the days that followed I throttled back to more typical daily lap counts of 40-60.

At the beginning if this summer, however, that little devil that sits on my shoulder started whispering in my ear that I was up to doing a 100-lap day.

The Twin Pillars of Preparedness

For a long time I had considered physical fitness to be the fundamental foundation of disaster preparedness. After all, without an appropriate level of fitness one may very well not be capable of surviving the demands of a disaster situation. Recently, however, I've become aware of a second element of preparedness that is every bit as fundamental and critical. That element is community.

I have been Remiss

I actually started this blog for purposes of contributing political commentary about the news of the day, yet I find that in recent months I've been more heavily tilted towards posting thoughts on my exercise and fitness program. I can't seem to shake the thought in the back of my head that if I make myself more healthy then I actually have the ultimate "health care program", so why should I be so concerned with the one being foisted on the nation by our inept leadership in Washington?
