The events unfolding today in Honduras conjure within my consciousness the immortal, stirring words of Shakespeare’s St. Crispin’s Day Speech from his play ‘Henry V’. In this scene King Henry V of England, confronted with an overwhelming foe on the battlefield, bolsters the courage of his meager army before battle.

The motion of the fins through the water must be one of the most elegant and soothing movements in all of nature. The fins themselves are like magic roller-coasters that can propel to swimmer almost instantly to any depth. I don’t understand why the pool is not filled with middle-aged people working out with fins(?) I can imagine no better, more healthy way to fully exercise and regenerate one’s legs (including circulation) than through the use of fins. As I slice through the water with my fins I am reminded of the passage in Jonathan Livingston Seagull that describes the main character (the seagull) as being totally consumed in the joy and perfection of flight. This, my friends, is the ‘Zen of Fins’!

About 10 days ago I had set for myself the goal of getting in 80 laps at the pool last weekend, and yesterday turned out to be that day. Achieving that goal was a bit of struggle. After the first 15 laps I was already feeling “out of the zone”, and starting to rationalize postponing until the following weekend.

Wednesday afternoon I managed to get all my work completed a little early, so I made it to the pool around 4pm. My goal was to get in what is for me a heavy workout, which was 60 laps plus some good time working with the my ScubaPro rocket fins.

For many production Linux servers it is important (and perhaps critical) for managers and administrators to be kept up-to-date with regard to consumption of disk and CPU processing resources. Often being up to date with such information increases system up time and, more importantly, reduces the frequency of calls from affected users and customers.
Manually monitoring this information is costly and impractical, so it is also important that these monitoring processes be automated. Some commercial software is available to meet this need, however the features of the Linux operating system, coupled with the text processing power of the PERL language, allow for simple and effective system monitoring scripts.

Friday and Sunday were both maximum, 60-lap days in the pool. Friday I ended with a sense of exhiliration, but Sunday was more of a “forced march”.

So, these past few months I’ve manged to drop several pounds of weight and gain some nice muscle tone with the swimming bit, but tonight it occurred to me that I’ve got to do more. I’ve got to get those darn carbos under control.
